🌍 Welcome to Junior Secondary Social Studies! 📖

In Social Studies, we explore how humans connect with their environment—past, present, and future. It’s an exciting mix of topics from History, Geography, Civics, Economics, and more! 🌟 This subject helps us understand the world we live in, how societies work, and how different cultures and ideas shape our world. 🌐 This course builds on the foundation laid by Lower Primary Cultural Studies and Upper Primary Social Studies. It prepares you for subjects like History, Geography, Development Studies, and Social Studies in Senior Secondary. 🎓


🎯 Rationale

At the heart of Social Studies is citizenship education. This course will help you become a responsible citizen who can make thoughtful decisions and actively participate in your community, nation, and the world. 🌍 You’ll learn about the values and ideals that form the backbone of Botswana, and how you can contribute to building a sustainable future. Social Studies will develop your critical thinking, teamwork, and inquiry skills, helping you become an informed and engaged member of society. 🏛️

📖 Teaching and Learning Approach

This course is designed to be interactive. Each unit is based on a theme and divided into lessons with activities to help you engage with the content. ✏️ You will also carry out research projects to explore the material in-depth. A project guide will assist you, and tutors are available to help when needed.


📝 Assessments

Throughout the course, you’ll test your understanding through activities, self-assessment exercises, and assignments. You’ll also have a mock exam to prepare you for the national exam, which will assess your knowledge and skills.

Time Management

This course can be completed in two years if you’re studying for the first time, or one year if you’re revising. Try to spend 2 hours per lesson and pace yourself through the course. 🕒

How the Examination Paper is Structured

Paper 1 consists of objective test items. These are multiple-choice questions drawn from all levels (Knowledge to evaluation). Candidates will be required to answer all questions. The duration of the paper is 1 hour 30 minutes and it carries 37.5% of all the marks in the JC Social Studies examination.

Paper 2 consists of three sections and candidates are required to answer all questions from each section. This paper addresses skills that are manipulative in nature. These are short essay questions, questions of inference, deduction and logical reasoning. The students would be required to use tools/references to answer questions. Section C of this paper is made up of questions that are based on research techniques. The duration of the paper is 2 hours 30 minutes and it carries 67.5% of the total marks of the whole examination.

 

A word of advice

Make sure you have a study plan and try to have regular study time. Also make use of study centres and tutors provided by the Classmate to help you with your studies.
