2. LESSON OVERVIEW

This lesson introduces learners to the concepts of needs and wants and how they are satisfied through goods and services. Learners will understand the roles of producers and consumers in the economy.

The lesson also explores how families and communities satisfy their needs and wants and the environmental impact of these activities.

3.1 Needs and Wants

Needs are basic requirements for survival

Wants are things people desire but are not essential

Examples:

Needs must be satisfied before wants.

3.2 Goods and Services

    Goods are physical items that can be seen and touched

Both goods and services satisfy needs and wants.

 

3.3 Classification of Goods

(a) Consumer Goods

  • Used directly by consumers

    Examples:

  • Food

  • Clothes

(b) Producer Goods

  • Used to produce other goods

    Examples:

  • Machines

  • Tools

Producer goods help create consumer goods.

3.4 Producers and Consumers

  • Producer → a person or business that makes goods or provides services

  • Consumer → a person who uses goods and services

Example:

A bakery produces bread → People consume it.

3.5 Importance of Producers

Producers are important because they:

  • Create goods and services

  • Satisfy human needs and wants

  • Create employment

  • Support economic development

Without producers, needs and wants cannot be met.

3.6 How Families and Communities Satisfy Needs and Wants

Families

  • Buy goods from shops

  • Produce food (e.g. farming)

  • Use services (schools, hospitals)

Communities

  • Provide markets

  • Offer services (transport, healthcare)

  • Support businesses

Cooperation between families and communities ensures satisfaction of needs.

3.7 Environmental Effects of Satisfying Needs and Wants

Activities to satisfy needs and wants can affect the environment:

Positive Actions
